Equipment

The Lands of Arekoz has all the same equipment as the typical fantasy setting, but also includes certain unique elements.

Deadman Catcher

The deadman catcher is a significantly nastier version of the man catcher.  Basically, the weapon has been designed to bite into the flesh of catpured undead and hold them fast while continuing to do additional damage.

The deadman catcher is constructed from a 10 ft. long wood pole to which is attached a set of iron clamps that automatically interlock upon a successful grapple attempt, holding an opponent. The weapon has been outfitted with barbs and spikes along the insdie of the iron iron clamps that encircle a trapped opponent. A successful hit allows for a free grapple attempt. A successful grapple indicates the target has been clamped into the device and suffers 1d4 subdual as well as 2d4 real damage per round held. An unsuccessful grapple still results in 1d4 subdual damage.  The wielder of the weaopn may attempt to render a captured opponent prone with a successful trip attempt.

The deadman catcher is a two-handed exotic melee weapon with reach.  It may be used to attack opponents 10 ft away, but not adjacent.  The cost is 40 gp, weight is 10 lbs. for a Medium creature (5 lbs. for a Small creature, and it does only 1d3 subdual, and 1d6 real damage).

The deadman catcher is used by the guards of Gateway and throughout Calrendia to handle undead creatures like ghouls and ghasts, reducing the risk to the city guards. Undead creatures plague the Calrendia - Mhul - Vehrmon region ever since the Undeath Wars 150 years ago.  Many tombs and mausoleums still contain whole bodies as for thousands of years religious rights have forbidden the destruction of the bodies of the deceased (with the reality of life restoring magic).  These strictures are changing slowly as having intact corpses around is becoming increasingly problemataic.

The deadman catcher first appeared in Enigma of the Arcanexus and is open game content. See Enigma for the proper OGL license information.
